Palm Kernel Fat
Typical portion
- Any typical portion
Palm kernel fat is Low FODMAP, a pure fat with virtually no carbohydrate for your gut to ferment.
- Because it is essentially all fat with negligible carbohydrate, there are no FODMAPs here to speak of, so any typical portion sits comfortably at low.
Use it freely for cooking or baking as you would any plain oil, and just keep an eye on the other ingredients in a recipe, since those are what shift the overall FODMAP picture.
Why palm kernel fat is rated low
Palm kernel fat is low FODMAP. The rating is estimated from what it is made of rather than a measured serving: it is fat pressed from the kernel of the oil palm fruit, solid at cool room temperature, with essentially no carbohydrate in it. Any typical portion is rated low. The catch is that almost nobody eats it on its own. It turns up inside chocolate-flavoured coatings, biscuit creams, nondairy creamers, whipped toppings and some spreads, and in those foods the other ingredients decide the FODMAP rating, not the fat.
What changes your risk
- The product it sits in A confectionery coating or biscuit filling built on palm kernel fat may also contain milk powder, honey, inulin or sugar-free sweeteners. Those are what can make the product high, so read past the fat on the label.
- Dairy-free is not the same as low FODMAP Nondairy creamers and whipped toppings made with palm kernel fat avoid milk, but some add inulin or chicory root fibre. A dairy-free claim does not settle the FODMAP question.
- Stacking sweet extras A coated snack bar, a creamer in your coffee and a filled biscuit at the same break can add up, because each product brings its own other ingredients. The fat adds nothing to that total.
- Baking does not change it Heat neither adds nor removes FODMAPs, so palm kernel fat behaves the same in a bake as it does in the block. The flour, sweetener and dairy in the recipe are what set the load.
- Palm oil and palm sugar Palm oil is a different fat, pressed from the fleshy outer part of the same fruit rather than from the kernel, and palm sugar is a sweetener rather than a fat. Palm sugar does not share this rating and needs to be looked up on its own.
What else works
Where you need a solid fat for baking, coconut oil fills a similar role and is likewise a pure fat. When the real choice is a product rather than an ingredient, pick one whose other ingredients are on the low side: sweetened with table sugar, maple syrup or rice malt syrup, and made with lactose-free milk where dairy is needed. The lookalikes that do not share the low rating are the products it is hidden in when they also carry honey, inulin, chicory root fibre, ordinary milk solids or sweeteners such as sorbitol, mannitol, xylitol, maltitol or isomalt, and palm sugar, which is a separate food.
How to keep it low
Palm kernel fat rarely appears under that exact name. On labels it is often listed as vegetable fat (palm kernel), palm kernel oil, or hydrogenated or fractionated palm kernel oil. Its presence is not a reason to put a product back; the rest of the ingredient list is. If you buy it as a block for baking, keep it sealed in a cool cupboard or the fridge, and pair it with gluten free flour, oats or a traditional sourdough base, and with sugar or maple syrup rather than honey, so the finished bake stays as low as the fat.
Common questions
is palm kernel oil low fodmap
Yes. Palm kernel oil and palm kernel fat are the same ingredient, and it is rated low FODMAP, estimated from what it is made of: a fat with essentially no carbohydrate. The rating covers Any typical portion.
are chocolate coatings made with palm kernel fat low fodmap
The fat itself is not the issue. Whether the coating is low depends on what else is in it, so check for milk powder, honey, inulin or sugar-free sweeteners on the label.
is palm kernel fat the same as palm sugar
No. Palm kernel fat is a fat, while palm sugar is a sweetener, and the two are rated as separate foods.
can i bake with palm kernel fat on the elimination phase
Yes, the fat fits the elimination phase. Build the rest of the bake from low FODMAP ingredients such as gluten free flour, table sugar or maple syrup, and lactose-free milk.

Palm Kernel Fat is an estimated rating: it is inferred from the food's ingredients and composition and cross-checked, not measured directly in the papers below. The low, moderate and high cutoffs are still those of Varney et al. (2017).
