Ouzo

Low FODMAP

Serving sizes

Ouzo changes rating with portion size. Its rating is estimated from what it is made of, so the servings are described rather than weighed.

  • Small serving Low
  • Large serving Moderate

Ouzo is Low FODMAP in a small serving, since distilling this anise spirit leaves it essentially free of fermentable carbohydrate.

  • As a distilled spirit, ouzo carries no fermentable carbs, so it sits low at a small serving and climbs to moderate at a large serving, where the alcohol itself becomes more of a gut irritant.
  • Neat or watered down into that classic cloudy glass, the spirit stays the same; it is the amount of alcohol, not any FODMAP, that adds up as you pour more.

Enjoy a modest measure slowly, and pair it with water or a low-FODMAP snack to keep things comfortable.

Why ouzo is rated low

Ouzo is rated low FODMAP overall, estimated from what it is made of, an anise-flavoured distilled spirit, rather than from a measured serving. The ladder shows a "Small serving" at LOW and a "Large serving" at MODERATE. No FODMAP group is recorded for ouzo, so the data does not name a single carbohydrate behind that step, but the step itself is part of the answer: the low rating belongs to a "Small serving", and a "Large serving" no longer reads low.

What changes your risk

  • Serving size LOW at a "Small serving", MODERATE at a "Large serving". The amount poured is the main lever, so the low rating does not carry over to doubling up.
  • Water and ice Adding water or ice turns ouzo cloudy but does not change how much ouzo is in the glass. The rating follows the ouzo, not the volume of the finished drink.
  • Sweetened mixers Ouzo topped with juice or a sweet soft drink brings in whatever is in the mixer. Juice concentrates fruit sugars, and drinks sweetened with high fructose corn syrup or honey are not low FODMAP.
  • The meze table With no FODMAP group recorded, stacking is about the total load of the meal. Hummus made from chickpeas, garlicky yoghurt dips, onion-heavy salads, pita bread and calamari in wheat batter can carry far more than the ouzo does.

What else works

Other spirits estimated low in this index, such as cognac, fill a similar sipping role, and dry Champagne works for a toast. Lookalikes that do not share ouzo's rating include sweetened anise liqueurs, ready-mixed anise drinks and cocktails built on fruit juice. On the meze table the swaps matter more than the drink: grilled fish, cucumber, grilled bell pepper and boiled potatoes dressed with olive oil keep the spread low, where garlic dips, hummus and pita do not.

How to keep it low

Serve it the traditional way, with cold water and ice in the glass, which lengthens the drink and slows sipping without adding anything beyond the ouzo itself. Pour it yourself with a measure, and keep the bottle off the table, so the serving stays at a "Small serving" rather than drifting toward a "Large serving" over a long meal. At a taverna, ask whether dips and salads are made with raw garlic or onion, and lean toward grilled fish, cucumber, peppers and potatoes dressed simply with olive oil.

Common questions

how much ouzo is low fodmap

A "Small serving" reads LOW, and a "Large serving" reaches MODERATE. The overall rating, estimated from what ouzo is made of, is low.

does adding water to ouzo change the fodmap

No. Water turns it cloudy and lengthens the drink, but the amount of ouzo in the glass is what the ladder rates.

can you drink ouzo on the low fodmap elimination phase

A "Small serving" fits within its low rating. Tolerance is individual, and the dips and breads served alongside often carry more FODMAPs than the ouzo itself.

what to eat with ouzo on a low fodmap diet

Grilled fish, cucumber, bell pepper and potatoes keep the meze table low. Hummus, garlic dips, onion salads and pita bring in legumes, garlic, onion and wheat.

Ouzo is an estimated rating: it is inferred from the food's ingredients and composition and cross-checked, not measured directly in the papers below. The low, moderate and high cutoffs are still those of Varney et al. (2017).
