Cachaca

Low FODMAP

Typical portion

  • Any typical portion Low

Cachaca is Low FODMAP, a distilled sugarcane spirit that carries no fermentable carbs to stir up trouble.

  • The distillation process leaves negligible carbohydrate behind, so there are no FODMAPs in the spirit itself, and a typical pour sits comfortably low.

Mixers and syrups are where the FODMAPs can sneak in, so keep an eye on what you pair it with and lean toward simple, low-FODMAP additions like fresh lime and a splash of soda.

Why cachaca is rated low

Cachaca is low FODMAP. The rating is estimated from what it is made of rather than from a measured serving: it is a spirit distilled from fermented sugarcane juice, and distillation leaves very little carbohydrate in the finished spirit, so the published ladder rates it low at "Any typical portion". The sugarcane it starts from is not what ends up in the glass. What can change the rating is the drink it goes into, because cocktails bring juices, syrups and liqueurs that the spirit itself does not contain.

What changes your risk

  • The mixer Cachaca with fresh lime, table sugar and soda water stays simple. Mixing it with apple juice, mango or passionfruit nectar, or a ready-made mixer sweetened with high fructose corn syrup brings in a load the spirit never had.
  • Fruit in the glass Fruit caipirinhas muddled with mango, peach, cherry or blackberry are not the same drink as the classic lime version. Lime, strawberries, raspberries, pineapple and orange are the lower choices.
  • Sweeteners and syrups Honey and agave syrup are common in cocktails and are not low. Table sugar, simple syrup made from table sugar, maple syrup and rice malt syrup are the safer sweeteners.
  • Infused and flavoured versions Flavoured or aged cachacas and pre-mixed cocktail cans may have fruit, sweeteners or flavourings added after distillation. Check the label rather than assuming they match the plain spirit.
  • Stacking with food A low drink alongside a meal still counts toward that meal's total. A cocktail with fruit juice plus a garlicky dish and a wheat-based side adds up across the sitting.

What else works

Plain cachaca sits alongside other distilled spirits such as vodka, gin and whisky, which are also low when served neat or with a simple mixer. The lookalikes that are NOT low by default are the mixed drinks: batidas made with ordinary milk or condensed milk, fruit caipirinhas with mango or stone fruit, and cocktails sweetened with honey or agave. A classic caipirinha made with lime, table sugar and ice, or cachaca with soda water and lime, keeps the drink in the low column.

How to keep it low

For a classic caipirinha at home, muddle fresh lime with table sugar in the glass, add ice and cachaca, and stir. If you want fruit, use strawberries, raspberries, pineapple or orange instead of mango or stone fruit. When ordering, ask what is in the house mix, since many bars use pre-made sweet and sour mixes or nectar, and ask for fresh lime and sugar instead. Store the bottle sealed at room temperature away from light, as with any spirit.

Common questions

is cachaca low fodmap

Yes. Plain cachaca is rated low at "Any typical portion", an estimate based on its being a distilled spirit with very little carbohydrate left after distillation.

is a caipirinha low fodmap

A classic caipirinha made with lime, table sugar and ice is a low choice. Versions with mango, stone fruit or honey bring in ingredients that are not low.

is cachaca high fodmap because it is made from sugarcane

No. It is distilled from fermented sugarcane juice, and the finished spirit carries very little of that carbohydrate, which is why it is estimated as low.

what mixer can i use with cachaca on a low fodmap diet

Soda water, fresh lime, and sugar or maple syrup keep it low. Avoid apple or mango juice and mixers sweetened with high fructose corn syrup, honey or agave.

Cachaca is an estimated rating: it is inferred from the food's ingredients and composition and cross-checked, not measured directly in the papers below. The low, moderate and high cutoffs are still those of Varney et al. (2017).
