Mango Nectar
Serving sizes
Mango Nectar changes rating with portion size. Its rating is estimated from what it is made of, so the servings are described rather than weighed.
- Small serving
- Moderate serving
- Large serving
Mango nectar is High FODMAP, since it packs concentrated mango into a sweet, drinkable form that carries a lot of natural fruit sugar.
- Mango is high in Excess Fructose, and concentrating it into a nectar makes that sugar more pronounced: even a small serving lands at moderate, and it climbs to high by a moderate serving.
- Fruit nectars like this are mango juice with the sugars concentrated down, so the fructose adds up fast in liquid form, and any extra sweeteners can shift the picture further.
If you're after a fruity drink, a splash of a low-FODMAP fruit juice topped up with water keeps things much lighter on your gut.
Why mango nectar is rated high
Mango nectar is high FODMAP, and the reason is Excess Fructose. Mango already carries more fructose than glucose, and turning the fruit into a smooth, sweet drink puts a lot of that fruit into every sip. This rating is estimated from what the drink is made of rather than from a measured serving, and the qualitative ladder shows how quickly it climbs: a Small serving already reads MODERATE, a Moderate serving reaches HIGH, and a Large serving stays HIGH. There is no rung that comes in low, so even the smallest helping is a portion to respect rather than a free pass.
What changes your risk
- Serving size The ladder starts at MODERATE for a Small serving and turns HIGH from a Moderate serving upward, so a bigger pour only adds to the Excess Fructose load.
- Juicing and pureeing A nectar gathers more mango than you would usually eat whole into one drink and drinks down fast, which is why it sits higher than people expect from a piece of fruit.
- Added sweeteners Nectars are often sweetened. Table sugar does not add Excess Fructose, but high fructose corn syrup, honey or agave in the ingredients list pile more onto a drink that is already high.
- Stacking Excess Fructose adds up across a meal. Mango nectar alongside apple, pear, watermelon, honey or a mango dessert stacks the same subgroup into one sitting.
- Blends Tropical nectar blends frequently mix mango with apple or pear juice, which carry the same subgroup, so a blend is not a lighter option.
Swaps
For a fruity, sweet drink that fills the same role, blend strawberries, pineapple or cantaloupe with water and ice, or muddle fresh orange, mandarin or kiwi into sparkling water. A splash of maple syrup or table sugar sweetens it without adding Excess Fructose. Skip anything built on apple, pear, watermelon or stone fruit juice, and do not reach for mango smoothies or mango sorbet, since they carry the same problem as the nectar.
How to lower the load
Read the label before buying: look for mango, high fructose corn syrup, honey, agave, apple or pear among the ingredients, because any of these pushes the Excess Fructose load higher. If you are making a tropical drink at home, build it around pineapple or citrus instead and keep the mango out of the blender. When ordering at a cafe or juice bar, ask which juices go into a tropical blend, since mango and apple are common bases that are not listed on the menu name.
Common questions
is mango nectar low fodmap
No. Mango nectar is rated high FODMAP overall, estimated from what it is made of. Even a Small serving reads MODERATE, and it climbs to HIGH by a Moderate serving.
is mango nectar high in fructose
Yes. Its rating comes from Excess Fructose, which mango carries naturally and which a nectar delivers in a concentrated, drinkable form.
can i drink mango nectar during the elimination phase
It is best left out during elimination, because no rung of the ladder comes in low. Reintroducing Excess Fructose foods is something to plan with a dietitian.
what can i drink instead of mango nectar
Pineapple or strawberry blended with water and ice, or sparkling water with fresh orange or mandarin, gives a sweet fruit drink without the mango. Avoid apple, pear and watermelon based juices as swaps.

Mango Nectar is an estimated rating: it is inferred from the food's ingredients and composition and cross-checked, not measured directly in the papers below. The low, moderate and high cutoffs are still those of Varney et al. (2017).
