Acerola Juice

Moderate FODMAP

Serving sizes

Acerola Juice changes rating with portion size. Its rating is estimated from what it is made of, so the servings are described rather than weighed.

  • Small serving Low
  • Large serving Moderate

Acerola juice is Moderate FODMAP, a concentrated fruit juice whose natural sugars add up as the glass gets bigger.

  • A small serving keeps acerola juice low, but a larger glass climbs to moderate as the excess fructose from all those concentrated fruit sugars builds up.
  • Juicing packs the sugars of many fruits into one drink, so the amount you pour matters more than with whole fruit, and added sweeteners or blends can shift the picture.

Sip a small glass to stay comfortable, or stretch it with water or ice to enjoy the flavor without concentrating the sugars.

Why acerola juice is rated moderate

Acerola juice is moderate FODMAP, and the driver is excess fructose. Juicing is why it lands here: the sugars of many acerola fruits end up in one glass and the fibre is left behind, so a pour delivers more fructose than eating the fresh fruit would. The rating is estimated from what the juice is made of rather than from a measured serving. On the ladder a "Small serving" reads LOW and a "Large serving" climbs to MODERATE, which is why the overall verdict is moderate: the amount you pour decides where it lands.

What changes your risk

  • Serving size "Small serving" reads LOW and "Large serving" reads MODERATE. Refilling the glass is how a low pour quietly turns into a moderate one.
  • Juice versus whole fruit Juice packs the sugars of several fruits into one drink without the fibre, so it runs higher than the fresh fruit. Concentrates, powders and syrups go further still, because less water means more sugar in every sip.
  • Blends and added sweeteners Bottles labelled acerola can be blends or sweetened drinks. Apple or pear juice, honey, agave or high fructose corn syrup on the ingredient list all add more excess fructose to the glass.
  • Stacking Excess fructose adds up across a meal. A glass alongside mango, watermelon, apple, honey on toast or a fruit smoothie stacks the same subgroup and can push breakfast past moderate.
  • Spreading it out Drinking it at a different time of day from other fructose-heavy foods keeps each sitting's load lower than having them together.

Swaps

For a fruity, tart drink with a lower load, whole fruit beats juice: oranges, mandarins, kiwi or strawberries bring the same bright, sharp flavour with the fibre still in. Still or sparkling water with fresh lemon juice and mint, or with sliced strawberries left to infuse, covers the cold-drink role. Do not swap to apple, pear or mango juice, which carry more of the same excess fructose, and treat any fruit juice, even one pressed from a low FODMAP fruit, as a concentrated form whose serving needs respecting.

How to lower the load

Pour one serving, then put the bottle back in the fridge before you sit down, so a "Small serving" does not drift toward a "Large serving". Topping the glass up with sparkling water or ice stretches the drink without adding fructose. Read the label for the words blend, nectar, from concentrate or added sugar, and for apple or pear juice as a base. Unsweetened, single-fruit acerola juice is the simplest version to judge.

Common questions

is acerola juice low fodmap

Not overall. Acerola juice is rated moderate FODMAP for excess fructose, estimated from what it is made of. A "Small serving" reads LOW, but a "Large serving" reaches MODERATE.

is acerola juice high in fructose

It carries excess fructose, the subgroup behind its moderate rating. Juicing concentrates the fruit's sugars into one glass, so the size of the pour matters more than with the fresh fruit.

can i drink acerola juice on the elimination phase

Only with the serving in mind. The "Small serving" rung reads LOW while a "Large serving" is MODERATE, so keep it to one pour and avoid drinking it with other excess fructose foods such as honey, apple or mango.

what can i drink instead of acerola juice

Whole oranges, mandarins or kiwi deliver the tart, fruity hit with the fibre intact, and water with fresh lemon and mint fills the drink role. Apple, pear and mango juice are not swaps, since they carry more excess fructose.

Acerola Juice is an estimated rating: it is inferred from the food's ingredients and composition and cross-checked, not measured directly in the papers below. The low, moderate and high cutoffs are still those of Varney et al. (2017).
