Guava Nectar

High FODMAP

Serving sizes

Guava Nectar changes rating with portion size. Its rating is estimated from what it is made of, so the servings are described rather than weighed.

  • Small serving Moderate
  • Moderate serving High
  • Large serving High

Guava nectar is High FODMAP, a concentrated fruit drink that packs a lot of fruit sugar into every sip.

  • Guava nectar carries excess fructose, and because it is concentrated juice often with added sugars, that sugar adds up fast in liquid form: it is moderate even at a small serving and climbs to high by a moderate serving.
  • Nectars come in many blends and some have extra sweeteners layered in, so added ingredients can push the FODMAP load even higher than the fruit alone.

When you want something fruity, a small glass of a low-FODMAP juice like cranberry or orange lets you sip without the same fructose pile-up.

Why guava nectar is rated high

Guava nectar is high FODMAP, and excess fructose is what drives it. A nectar is fruit pulp and juice thinned with water and usually sweetened, so the fruit sugar arrives concentrated and in liquid form, which makes it easy to drink a lot of it quickly. The rating is estimated from what the drink is made of rather than a measured serving, and the ladder shows how fast it climbs: a "Small serving" is already moderate, and by a "Moderate serving" it reaches high, staying high at a "Large serving". There is no rung where it comes in low.

What changes your risk

  • Serving size Even the "Small serving" sits at moderate, and the "Moderate serving" is already high. There is no amount on the ladder that brings guava nectar down to low.
  • Juicing and concentration A nectar packs the fruit sugar of several pieces of fruit into one drink and leaves most of the whole fruit behind, so it runs higher than eating fruit does.
  • Added sweeteners Many nectars are sweetened on top of the fruit. High fructose corn syrup, honey or agave on the ingredient list add more excess fructose to a drink that already has plenty.
  • Tropical blends Guava nectar often comes mixed with mango, apple or pear juice, which carry the same problem. A blend can easily land higher than guava nectar alone.
  • Stacking Drinking it alongside other fruit carrying excess fructose, such as mango, apple, watermelon or anything sweetened with honey, piles the same load into one sitting.

Swaps

For a fruity drink that fills the same role, the honest swaps are whole fruit and water rather than another nectar. Fresh orange or mandarin segments, pineapple, kiwi, strawberries and cantaloupe give the tropical sweetness without the concentrated load of a nectar, and sparkling water with orange or pineapple pieces in it makes a cold, fruity glass. Avoid reaching for mango, apple or pear juice, or a fruit punch sweetened with high fructose corn syrup, as a replacement, because they share the same excess fructose problem. Whole guava is a different food from the nectar and has its own rating, so look it up separately rather than assuming it matches.

How to lower the load

Read the label before buying: a carton listing water, sugar and guava puree is a nectar, and anything adding apple, pear or mango juice or high fructose corn syrup sits on the riskier side. If guava nectar is part of a cocktail, a smoothie or a breakfast spread, treat it as the high FODMAP part of that order and build the rest around low FODMAP foods. At home, a pitcher of chilled water with sliced orange and pineapple gives you a fruity drink to pour freely, which is far easier to manage than measuring out nectar.

Common questions

is guava nectar low fodmap

No. Guava nectar is rated high FODMAP overall because of excess fructose. Even a "Small serving" comes in at moderate, and a "Moderate serving" is already high.

is guava nectar high in fructose

Yes, excess fructose is the subgroup that drives its rating. The nectar concentrates fruit sugar into a drink, and many versions add more sweetener on top.

how much guava nectar can i drink on low fodmap

There is no low rung on the ladder. A "Small serving" is moderate, and both a "Moderate serving" and a "Large serving" are high, so it is not a drink for the elimination phase.

what can i drink instead of guava nectar

Sparkling or still water with orange or pineapple pieces gives a fruity drink without the nectar's load. Whole oranges, kiwi, strawberries and pineapple are low FODMAP ways to get the same tropical sweetness.

Guava Nectar is an estimated rating: it is inferred from the food's ingredients and composition and cross-checked, not measured directly in the papers below. The low, moderate and high cutoffs are still those of Varney et al. (2017).
