Dried Apple
Tested serving
- ½ cup (45g)
Dried apple is High FODMAP at ½ cup (45g), driven by concentrated Sorbitol.
- Drying apple removes the water but leaves the Sorbitol behind in a much more concentrated form, which is what pushes it to High FODMAP at the tested ½ cup (45g) serving.
- Sorbitol is a sugar polyol that many people with IBS find hard to absorb, and because dried fruit is so easy to nibble, the amount can add up quickly without you noticing.
If you're craving that chewy sweetness, try savoring just a few pieces slowly, or reach for a small portion of a fresh low-FODMAP fruit instead.
Per ½ cup (45g): 0.85g sorbitol.
Why dried apple is rated high
Dried apple is high FODMAP at the only serving the published data tests, ½ cup (45g), and sorbitol is the single reason. Fresh apple already carries sorbitol, and drying takes the water out while leaving that sorbitol behind, so a scoop of chewy pieces stands in for a great deal more fruit than it looks like on the plate. The ladder for dried apple has one rung and that rung is high, so there is no smaller tested amount to fall back on and no published serving of dried apple that comes in lower.
What changes your risk
- Drying is the whole story Removing the water does not remove the sorbitol, it concentrates it, which is why dried apple behaves so differently from the fresh fruit even though it is the same apple.
- Serving size, with only one rung tested ½ cup (45g) is the sole tested serving and it is high. Nothing smaller has a published level, so there is no tested portion of dried apple to lean on.
- Sorbitol stacking across the day Dried apple is rarely the only sorbitol on the table. Fresh apple, pear, blackberry, stone fruit, and sugar-free gum or mints sweetened with sorbitol all draw on the same subgroup, and they add together across a meal or an afternoon.
- Grazing straight from the bag Dried fruit is the easiest thing in the kitchen to eat without counting. Pieces eaten one at a time over an hour still land in the same gut as pieces eaten all at once.
- Cooking will not rescue it Stewing dried apple into a compote or baking it into a crumble does not break the sorbitol down, and anything that moves into the cooking liquid is still in the bowl when the syrup is served with it.
Swaps
There is no honest dried-fruit swap to offer here, so it is better to change the shape of the snack than to hunt for a chewier one. For the sweet hit, strawberries, blueberries, raspberries, grapes, mandarin segments, kiwi or pineapple all fill the fruit role, and a firm just-yellow banana sliced over oats gives you the soft sweetness that dried apple brings to muesli. For the trail mix job, peanuts, walnuts, macadamias, pecans and pumpkin seeds carry the snack without the sorbitol. Do not reach for dried pear, dried apricot, or blackberries as a substitute, because those share the same subgroup and simply move the problem sideways.
How to lower the load
Dried apple hides more than it headlines. Check bircher muesli and granola, fruit and nut trail mixes, snack bars, kids' fruit bites and fruit strips, stuffing mixes and pork dishes, and the fruit blends in herbal teas. On a label it can appear as apple, dried apple, or apple pieces well down the list. If you buy dried fruit for the rest of the household, keeping it in a sealed tin rather than an open bowl on the counter removes the temptation to graze, and building your own oats or muesli base from rolled oats, seeds and fresh low FODMAP fruit gives you a bowl you do not have to pick through.
Common questions
how much dried apple is low fodmap
There is no low serving in the published data. The one tested serving, ½ cup (45g), is high in sorbitol, and no smaller portion of dried apple has a tested level to quote.
is dried apple high in sorbitol
Yes. Sorbitol is the subgroup that drives the rating, and drying concentrates it, which is what puts ½ cup (45g) in the high range.
can i eat dried apple during the elimination phase
Dried apple is high FODMAP at the tested serving, so it is normally left out during elimination. Reintroducing it later is something to work through with a dietitian, and tolerance varies from person to person.
what can i use instead of dried apple in muesli
Fresh fruit does the job: sliced strawberries, blueberries, grapes or a firm just-yellow banana stirred through oats, with pumpkin seeds, walnuts or pecans for the chew. Dried pear and dried apricot are not swaps, since both carry sorbitol too.
