Tofu (smoked)
Typical portion
- Any typical portion
Smoked tofu is Low FODMAP, a firm, pressed protein where the fermentable carbs have already been squeezed out.
- Pressing firm tofu drains off most of the water-soluble GOS, leaving mostly protein behind, and the smoking step adds no fermentable carbs, so it stays comfortable at any typical portion.
- This applies to firm, pressed and smoked tofu; softer silken tofu holds onto more of those carbs, and any marinades or sauces can bring their own ingredients into the mix.
Slice it into stir-fries, salads, or noodle bowls for an easy plant protein, and check any glaze or marinade for garlic and onion.
Why tofu (smoked) is rated low
Smoked tofu is low FODMAP. The rating is estimated from what it is made of rather than from a measured serving, and smoked tofu is a firm, dense block of tofu that has been smoked for flavour, which places it with firm tofu rather than with whole soy beans. The published ladder rates it low at "Any typical portion". Smoking adds flavour and does not add FODMAPs. What can change the picture is anything else in the pack: some smoked tofu is sold marinated or glazed, and those coatings can carry garlic, onion or sweeteners.
What changes your risk
- Plain versus marinated Plain smoked tofu is the low version. Smoked tofu sold in a marinade or with a glaze may include garlic, onion, honey or other sweeteners, so the ingredient list decides whether it stays low.
- Firm versus silken Smoked tofu is a firm product. Silken tofu is a different, softer style that is not rated the same way, so the low rating here does not transfer to it.
- Whole soy beans are different Tofu is made from soy beans, but whole soy beans at ordinary servings are not low. The rating applies to the finished smoked tofu, not to soy in general.
- Sauces in the dish Smoked tofu often goes into stir-fries, noodle bowls and sandwiches. Bottled stir-fry sauces, sweet chilli sauce and satay sauce can bring garlic and onion, and those cooked into the dish stay there.
- Stacking the bowl A smoked tofu bowl built on wheat noodles with onion, mushroom and a garlicky sauce adds up quickly, even though the tofu itself is low. Judge the whole meal.
What else works
Smoked tofu shares its low rating with plain firm tofu, eggs, and plain meat, poultry and fish, all of which fill the same protein role in a meal. The lookalikes that are NOT the same are silken tofu, whole soy beans and soy-based products made from whole beans, and marinated tofu products whose sauce includes garlic or onion. For a smoky flavour in a dish without tofu, plain firm tofu pan-fried with smoked paprika, or grilled chicken or fish, keeps the meal low.
How to keep it low
Read the pack and choose smoked tofu where the ingredients are soy beans, water, a coagulant and smoke, with no garlic, onion or honey in a marinade. It is already firm and ready to eat, so there is no need to press it: slice it thin for sandwiches, cube it into salads, or fry it until crisp for rice and noodle bowls. Season the dish with soy sauce, ginger, garlic-infused oil and the green tops of spring onions. Once opened, keep it covered in the fridge and use it within the time the pack recommends.

Yes. Plain smoked tofu is rated low at "Any typical portion", an estimate based on its being a firm tofu product. Marinated or glazed versions depend on what the marinade contains.

Only if the marinade is. Some marinades include garlic, onion or honey, so check the ingredient list before assuming it matches plain smoked tofu.
what goes well with smoked tofu on a low fodmap diet
Rice, rice noodles, bok choy, carrot, bell pepper and zucchini all pair well, seasoned with soy sauce, ginger and garlic-infused oil instead of fresh garlic.
