Antelope
Typical portion
- Any typical portion
Antelope is Low FODMAP, a plain game meat that's essentially pure protein and fat with nothing fermentable to worry about.
- As unprocessed game meat, antelope has negligible carbohydrate and carries no FODMAPs, so it stays comfortable at any typical portion.
Keep it simple with herbs, salt, and garlic-infused oil, since it's the marinades, rubs, and sauces that can sneak FODMAPs onto your plate.
Why antelope is rated low
Antelope is low FODMAP. FODMAPs are carbohydrates, and plain antelope meat is made of protein and fat with almost no carbohydrate, so there is nothing in the meat itself for the rating to hang on. That rating is estimated from what the food is made of rather than from a measured serving, and it covers "Any typical portion" as low. What it does not cover is everything that tends to arrive with game meat: the marinade, the rub, the sausage seasoning, the gravy. Those are where a low plate quietly stops being low.
What changes your risk
- Marinades and rubs Game is often marinated to soften its flavour, and many marinades lean on onion, garlic, honey or fruit juice. The meat stays low, but the marinade clinging to it does not.
- Processed antelope Antelope sausages, burgers, salami and jerky are mixed with seasonings, binders and sometimes breadcrumbs, so they are not covered by the rating for the plain meat. Read the ingredient list every time.
- Stock and pan sauces A red wine reduction or gravy built on ordinary stock usually starts with onion and garlic. Cooking does not break their FODMAPs down, so the sauce carries them straight onto the plate.
- The rest of the meal A low rating is per serving, not per meal. Antelope served with garlic bread, onion gravy and a creamy mash adds up to a high load even though the meat itself contributed none of it.
- Portion beyond typical The rating covers any typical portion. An unusually large helping sits outside what the rating describes, so keep the meat to an ordinary plate and let the low FODMAP sides fill the rest.
What else works
If antelope is hard to find, other plain unseasoned meats sit in the same low place: venison steak, beef, lamb, chicken and pork, along with eggs and plain fish. Firm tofu works where a lean protein is wanted without meat. The lookalikes to be careful with are the ready-made game products. Game sausages, burgers, pies and jerky often contain onion, garlic, wheat breadcrumbs or a sweet glaze, so they are not automatically low just because the meat inside them is.
How to keep it low
Antelope is very lean, so it dries out fast: sear steaks or medallions hot and quick and rest them before slicing, or braise tougher cuts slowly in liquid you have built yourself. For flavour, use salt, pepper, rosemary, thyme, juniper, the green tops of spring onions and garlic-infused oil with no solid pieces left in it. If you make a pan sauce, deglaze with a homemade or onion-free stock rather than an ordinary carton. When buying ground antelope or sausages, ask whether anything has been added beyond the meat. Freezing is fine for storage and does not change the rating either way.
Common questions
is antelope low fodmap
Yes. Plain antelope is rated low FODMAP at "Any typical portion", an estimate based on the meat being protein and fat with almost no carbohydrate.
can you eat antelope on the low fodmap elimination phase
Plain antelope fits the elimination phase because its rating is low at any typical portion. The things to check are the marinade, rub or sauce, since onion and garlic are common in all three.
is antelope jerky low fodmap
Not automatically. Jerky is seasoned and often contains onion powder, garlic powder or honey, so the rating for plain antelope does not carry over. Check the ingredient list.
what to season antelope with on a low fodmap diet
Salt, pepper, rosemary, thyme, juniper, chives and garlic-infused oil all work well with antelope. They give plenty of flavour without the onion and garlic that most game marinades rely on.

Antelope is an estimated rating: it is inferred from the food's ingredients and composition and cross-checked, not measured directly in the papers below. The low, moderate and high cutoffs are still those of Varney et al. (2017).
