Flat Bread
Serving sizes
Flat Bread changes rating with portion size. Its rating is estimated from what it is made of, so the servings are described rather than weighed.
- Small serving
- Moderate serving
- Large serving
Flatbread is High FODMAP, since most versions are built on wheat flour that carries fermentable carbs.
- The Fructans in wheat flour drive this one: a small serving sits at moderate, but the load climbs to high by a moderate serving and stays there at larger portions.
- Flatbread comes in many styles, and the grain is what really matters here; wheat-based versions carry the most, while flatbreads made from low-FODMAP grains behave differently.
Look for a certified gluten-free flatbread, or reach for corn tortillas or rice-based wraps when you want a comfortable base.
Why flat bread is rated high
Flat bread is high FODMAP because most versions are made from wheat flour, and wheat brings fructans. The rating is estimated from what flat bread is made of rather than a measured serving, and the climb happens quickly: a Small serving sits at moderate, a Moderate serving is high, and a Large serving stays high. That means even the smallest step is not low, so tearing off less of a wheat flat bread does not make it a low FODMAP choice. The grain is the deciding factor here, which is why flat breads made without wheat behave so differently.
What changes your risk
- Serving size Fructans build with the amount eaten. The ladder moves from moderate at a Small serving to high at a Moderate serving, and stays high at a Large serving.
- Garlic and onion toppings Garlic flat breads, onion-topped breads and herb butters with fresh garlic add more fructans on top of the wheat. Garlic-infused oil gives the flavour without that extra load.
- Fermentation A long, traditional sourdough fermentation breaks down much of the fructan in wheat or spelt. Most flat breads are quick yeasted or unleavened doughs, and a fast loaf labelled sourdough flavoured is not the same thing.
- Dips and fillings Flat bread is usually eaten with hummus, garlic yoghurt dips or onion-heavy fillings, which stack more FODMAPs into the same meal.
- Cooking Grilling, toasting or baking does not destroy fructans. A crisp, charred flat bread carries the same load as a soft one.
Swaps
For wraps and tacos, plain corn tortillas and certified gluten free wraps fill the same role. For dipping and tearing, a gluten free flat bread or pita works, and a traditional sourdough spelt or wheat bread made with a long fermentation is a common option for toasting and topping. To get a garlic bread effect, brush a gluten free base with garlic-infused oil and scatter over chives or the green tops of spring onions. Pair it with low FODMAP dips such as lactose-free yoghurt with chives and cucumber rather than hummus or a fresh garlic sauce.
How to lower the load
Read the flour list on any flat bread or wrap: wheat, rye, barley and spelt that has not been sourdough fermented all bring fructans, and some gluten free wraps add inulin or chicory root fibre, which brings fructans back in. Gluten free wraps tend to crack when cold, so warm them briefly in a dry pan before rolling. When ordering out, plain rice or a corn-based option is usually safer than any bread basket, and garlic naan or garlic flat bread is best skipped. Gluten free flat breads freeze well, so keep a stack in the freezer and toast them straight from frozen.
Common questions
is flatbread low fodmap
No. Wheat flat bread is rated high FODMAP overall, an estimate based on its wheat flour and the fructans it carries.
how much flatbread can i eat on a low fodmap diet
None of the steps on its ladder is low. A Small serving is moderate, while a Moderate serving and a Large serving are both high.
is sourdough flatbread low fodmap
A long, traditional sourdough fermentation breaks down much of the fructan in wheat or spelt, which is why traditional sourdough is treated differently. A quick flat bread with sourdough flavouring has not had that fermentation and stays in the high category.
what is a low fodmap substitute for flatbread
Plain corn tortillas, certified gluten free wraps or flat breads, and traditional sourdough spelt bread fill the same role. Check gluten free products for inulin or chicory root fibre.

Flat Bread is an estimated rating: it is inferred from the food's ingredients and composition and cross-checked, not measured directly in the papers below. The low, moderate and high cutoffs are still those of Varney et al. (2017).
