Bagel

High FODMAP

Serving sizes

Bagel changes rating with portion size. Its rating is estimated from what it is made of, so the servings are described rather than weighed.

  • Small serving Moderate
  • Moderate serving High
  • Large serving High

Bagels are High FODMAP, since they're dense wheat bread that packs a lot into every bite.

  • The density comes from concentrated wheat Fructans, so even a small serving sits at moderate and a moderate serving climbs to high.
  • Most plain bagels follow this pattern, though added ingredients like onion or garlic toppings push the FODMAP load even higher.

If you're craving that chewy texture, reach for a certified gluten-free bagel or a slice of gluten-free bread to keep things comfortable.

Why bagel is rated high

A bagel is rated high FODMAP overall because it is a dense wheat bread, and wheat carries Fructans. The rating is estimated from what a bagel is made of rather than a measured serving. The ladder's lowest rung is a Small serving at MODERATE, and it reads HIGH from a Moderate serving onward, including a Large serving. There is no low rung, so even a Small serving is not a low FODMAP choice. The tight, chewy crumb packs more wheat into each bite than an airy sandwich loaf, and boiling and baking do not break the Fructans down.

What changes your risk

  • Serving size The ladder never drops below MODERATE: a Small serving reads MODERATE and both a Moderate serving and a Large serving read HIGH.
  • Toppings and flavours Onion bagels, garlic bagels and everything seasoning add more Fructans on top of the wheat, and rye, pumpernickel and wholemeal versions are still wheat or rye based.
  • What goes on it A schmear of cream cheese is not low FODMAP either, and spreads or salads made with onion, chives mixed with garlic, or garlic powder stack onto the bagel's own Fructans.
  • Stacking in one meal A bagel alongside other wheat foods, onion or garlic in the same sitting adds up Fructans across the plate.
  • Fermentation style Traditional long-fermented sourdough breaks down much of the Fructans in wheat, but an ordinary yeasted bagel is not made that way, and sourdough flavouring on a fast-risen dough is not the same thing.

Swaps

A gluten free bagel or gluten free bread, toasted, fills the same breakfast role, and traditional sourdough spelt or wheat bread is another option for a toasted base. For a different route to a filling breakfast, oats, potato rosti or rice cakes topped like a bagel work well. Top any of these with eggs, smoked fish, cheddar or swiss, sliced cucumber and chives, or lactose-free cream style spreads, rather than the classic cream cheese and onion.

How to lower the load

When buying gluten free bagels or bread, read the ingredient list for inulin or chicory root fibre, which are sometimes added for texture and bring Fructans back in. Gluten free bagels tend to stale quickly, so slice and freeze them on the day you buy them and toast straight from frozen. At a cafe or deli, ask what the bagel shop offers in gluten free and skip onion, garlic and everything toppings. Build fillings from plain proteins and hard cheese, and season with chives or the green tops of spring onions instead of onion.

Common questions

are bagels low fodmap

No. A bagel is rated high FODMAP overall, estimated from what it is made of. A Small serving reads MODERATE, and a Moderate serving and a Large serving read HIGH.

why are bagels high in fructans

Bagels are made from wheat flour, and wheat carries Fructans. The dense, chewy dough means each bite holds more wheat than a light sandwich loaf.

can i eat a bagel on the elimination phase

A regular wheat bagel does not fit the elimination phase, since even a Small serving reads MODERATE. A gluten free bagel without inulin or chicory root fibre is the usual swap.

what is a good low fodmap substitute for a bagel

A toasted gluten free bagel or gluten free bread, or traditional sourdough spelt or wheat bread, fills the same role. Top it with eggs, smoked fish or hard cheese instead of cream cheese and onion.

Bagel is an estimated rating: it is inferred from the food's ingredients and composition and cross-checked, not measured directly in the papers below. The low, moderate and high cutoffs are still those of Varney et al. (2017).
