Trout (smoked)

Low FODMAP

Typical portion

  • Any typical portion Low

Smoked trout is Low FODMAP, a plain protein-and-fat fish with almost no carbohydrate to ferment.

  • Smoked trout is essentially pure protein and fat with negligible carbohydrate, so it sits comfortably at low FODMAP across any typical portion, and the smoking process itself adds nothing fermentable.

Enjoy it flaked over rice, eggs, or salad; just keep an eye on flavored glazes or sauces, since added ingredients like garlic or onion can change the picture.

Why trout (smoked) is rated low

Smoked trout is low FODMAP. It is fish, fat and the salt from the brine, and none of those is a fermentable carbohydrate, so the rating, estimated from what the food is made of rather than a measured serving, covers any typical portion. Smoking adds flavour, not FODMAPs. Where smoked trout gets into trouble is in what it is served with: creamy dips, pâtés, horseradish sauces and the bread or crackers underneath.

What changes your risk

  • Flavoured fillets Plain smoked trout is low, but fillets sold with a glaze, a honey cure or a garlic and onion seasoning carry those ingredients too. Read the label on anything described as flavoured.
  • Dips and pâtés Smoked trout pâté is often blended with cream cheese, sour cream or soft cheese, plus shallot or garlic. Those make a ready-made spread a different food from the fillet itself.
  • What it sits on Rye crackers, wheat blinis and ordinary bread add their own load. The fish stays low whatever it is perched on.
  • Sauces on the side Creamy horseradish dressings and herby mayonnaise blends often contain garlic, onion or cream. A squeeze of lemon, dill and capers keep the plate simple.
  • Portion and plate The low rating applies to any typical portion of trout. The meal's total depends on everything else served alongside it.

What else works

Other plain smoked or cooked fish are also low when nothing is added: smoked salmon, hot-smoked mackerel, plain tinned tuna or salmon, and fresh trout or salmon cooked at home. The lookalikes that are not reliably low are smoked fish pâtés, creamy fish dips, fish cakes bound with wheat breadcrumbs and onion, and fillets in a sweet or garlicky marinade. If you want something creamy with it, lactose-free yoghurt or lactose-free cream cheese stirred with dill and lemon makes a spread that stays low.

How to keep it low

Choose smoked trout fillets whose ingredients are trout, salt and smoke, and keep them sealed in the fridge, using them by the date on the pack once opened. Flake the fish over warm potatoes, rice, a baby spinach salad or scrambled eggs, or fold it into a frittata. For a quick spread, mash it with lactose-free yoghurt, lemon zest, chives and black pepper and serve it on gluten free crackers or traditional sourdough. Peel the skin away before flaking and check for any pin bones.
