Sweet Lupin Bean

High FODMAP

Serving sizes

Sweet Lupin Bean changes rating with portion size. Its rating is estimated from what it is made of, so the servings are described rather than weighed.

  • Small serving Moderate
  • Moderate serving High
  • Large serving High
GOS

Sweet lupin beans are High FODMAP, carrying the fermentable sugars typical of legumes.

  • Like other legumes, lupin beans bring GOS to the plate, so they sit at moderate even at a small serving and climb to high by a moderate serving.
  • You will find them pickled, in flour, or as a snack bean, and any added ingredients can shift the picture, but the beans themselves are the main driver here.

If you are after a plant protein that sits gently, canned and rinsed lentils in a small portion are a reliable low-FODMAP swap.

Why sweet lupin bean is rated high

Sweet lupin beans are high FODMAP, and GOS is the reason. Like other legumes, lupins store GOS in the bean, and it does not take much for that to add up. The ladder shows there is no low rung to fall back on: a Small serving is already MODERATE, a Moderate serving is HIGH, and a Large serving stays HIGH. So the honest answer is that lupins are a high FODMAP food overall, and even the smallest serving is not low. This rating is estimated from what the bean is made of rather than from a measured serving.

What changes your risk

  • Serving size The climb is short. A Small serving reads MODERATE and a Moderate serving already reads HIGH, so there is no serving on the ladder where lupins become low.
  • Brine, draining and rinsing GOS dissolves in water, so some of it leaches into the brine of jarred or canned lupins. Tipping the beans into a sieve, pouring the liquid away and rinsing them under running water removes what has moved into that liquid. It lowers the load somewhat but does not override the rating given here.
  • Cooking water If you cook lupins from dried, soaking and boiling them in plenty of water and throwing that water away lets some GOS leach out. Cooking itself does not destroy GOS, and roasting or frying lupins removes nothing, because nothing leaves the bean.
  • Stacking with other legumes Lupins share GOS with chickpeas, lentils, kidney beans, soy beans and hummus. Pairing lupins with any of them in one meal piles GOS on GOS.
  • Lupin flour in other foods Lupin flour is made from the whole bean and turns up in some gluten-free and high-protein breads, pasta and baked goods, so it can bring GOS into foods that do not look like legumes.

Swaps

For the role lupins usually play, a salty, protein-rich snack or a plant protein in salads and bowls, the swaps that sit well are firm tofu, eggs, plain chicken or fish, peanuts, walnuts, macadamias and pumpkin seeds. For bulk in a salad, quinoa, potato or rice do the job without the GOS. Do not swap in another legume to fix a lupin problem: chickpeas, lentils, kidney beans and soy beans all carry GOS too. For a gluten-free flour, rice flour, buckwheat flour or oats are the safer route than lupin flour.

How to lower the load

Lupins are most often sold jarred or canned in brine as a snack bean. If you choose to eat them, always drain them through a sieve, discard the brine and rinse them well under cold running water before eating, and keep the portion small, remembering that even a Small serving is still moderate rather than low. Do not combine them with hummus or other beans in the same sitting. When buying gluten-free or high-protein bread, pasta or crackers, check the ingredient list for lupin flour or lupin protein.

Common questions

are lupini beans low fodmap

No. Sweet lupin beans are high FODMAP overall because of their GOS. A Small serving reads MODERATE, and a Moderate serving and a Large serving are both HIGH.

how much lupin beans can i eat on a low fodmap diet

There is no low serving on the ladder. The smallest rung, a Small serving, is already MODERATE, so lupins are not a food to lean on during the elimination phase.

does rinsing lupini beans reduce fodmaps

Rinsing helps a little, because GOS is water-soluble and some of it leaches into the brine, which you pour away. It does not change the overall rating, which stays high.

what is a low fodmap swap for lupin beans

For a salty, protein-rich snack, peanuts or pumpkin seeds work well, and firm tofu or eggs fill the plant or protein role in meals. Avoid swapping in another legume, since they carry GOS too.
