Soybean Pasta
Serving sizes
Soybean Pasta changes rating with portion size. Its rating is estimated from what it is made of, so the servings are described rather than weighed.
- Small serving
- Moderate serving
- Large serving
Soybean pasta is High FODMAP, since it's made straight from a legume that packs plenty of fermentable carbohydrate into every bite.
- Built from whole soybeans, it carries GOS, which climbs fast with serving size: a small serving sits at moderate, and it reaches high by a moderate serving.
- Most soybean pastas share this profile since the legume itself is the whole ingredient, though added sauces or toppings can shift things further.
If you're craving a bowl of pasta, a naturally gluten-free option like rice or corn pasta gives you the comfort without the GOS load.
Why soybean pasta is rated high
Soybean pasta is rated high FODMAP, and the reason is simple: the noodle is made from soybeans, a legume, so it carries GOS in every forkful. The rating is estimated from what it is made of rather than from a measured serving, and the ladder shows how fast it climbs. A Small serving already reads moderate, and by a Moderate serving it is high, staying high at a Large serving. There is no low rung here, so this is not a pasta to treat as a gentle option in any amount.
What changes your risk
- Serving size The ladder starts at moderate for a Small serving and turns high at a Moderate serving, so the plate never drops into low territory. Going smaller does not make it a low FODMAP food.
- Stacking with other legumes GOS adds up across a meal. Pairing soybean pasta with chickpeas, lentils, kidney beans, baked beans or edamame in the same sitting piles more GOS on top of a load that is already moderate at its smallest.
- Cooking water Cooking does not destroy GOS, but GOS is water-soluble, so some of it can move into the boiling water. Cook it in plenty of water and pour that water away rather than using it to loosen the sauce. This trims the load a little; it does not change the rating.
- Hidden onion and garlic in the sauce Jarred pasta sauces, pesto and stock often bring onion and garlic, which add their own FODMAP load on top of the noodle itself.
Swaps
For the same high protein, pasta-shaped role, the honest swaps sit outside the legume family. Gluten free pasta made from rice or corn, rice noodles, quinoa and buckwheat all fill the bowl without the GOS. If protein is the draw, add it separately: firm tofu, eggs, chicken, fish or a grating of parmesan on a gluten free pasta covers the same ground. Watch for the lookalikes that are not swaps at all: chickpea pasta, red lentil pasta, black bean pasta and edamame pasta are all legume noodles with the same GOS problem, and ordinary wheat pasta trades GOS for fructans.
How to lower the load
Read the ingredient list on any high protein or gluten free pasta, because legume flours are often blended into products that look like ordinary noodles. If the first ingredient is soybean, chickpea, lentil, pea or bean flour, treat it like soybean pasta. When cooking for a mixed table, boil a pot of gluten free rice or corn pasta alongside and dress both with the same sauce made from garlic-infused oil, canned tomato and the green tops of spring onions, so the low FODMAP plate does not feel like the lesser one.
Common questions
is soybean pasta low fodmap
No. Soybean pasta is rated high FODMAP overall because it is made from soybeans, which carry GOS. A Small serving reads moderate and a Moderate serving is already high.
is soybean pasta high in gos
Yes. GOS is the subgroup that drives its rating, since the pasta is built from a legume. That is the same reason chickpea and lentil pastas run high.
can i eat soybean pasta on the elimination phase
It is not a good fit for the elimination phase, because even its smallest rung, a Small serving, reads moderate rather than low. Gluten free rice or corn pasta, quinoa or buckwheat fill the same spot on the plate.
does boiling soybean pasta lower the fodmaps
Cooking does not destroy GOS, though some can leach into the cooking water if you drain it away. That helps only slightly and does not move soybean pasta out of high.

Soybean Pasta is an estimated rating: it is inferred from the food's ingredients and composition and cross-checked, not measured directly in the papers below. The low, moderate and high cutoffs are still those of Varney et al. (2017).
