Soybean Lecithin

Low FODMAP

Typical portion

  • Any typical portion Low

Soybean lecithin is Low FODMAP, a purified emulsifier extracted from the bean with none of the fermentable carbohydrate carried along for the ride.

  • As an isolated phospholipid emulsifier, soy lecithin holds negligible fermentable carbohydrate, and the soybean's usual GOS stays behind in the bean rather than the purified lecithin, so any typical portion sits comfortably low.

You will find it listed in all sorts of packaged foods as a smoothing agent, and at the amounts used it does not tip a product's FODMAP load, though it is always worth glancing at the rest of the ingredients.

Why soybean lecithin is rated low

Soybean lecithin is low FODMAP. It is an emulsifier separated out of soybean oil, made of fatty compounds called phospholipids, and the purified product carries negligible carbohydrate. That matters because the soybean as a whole is not low FODMAP: its fermentable carbohydrates stay in the bean and the leftover meal rather than travelling with the lecithin. The ladder shows Any typical portion as LOW. The rating is estimated from what the lecithin is made of rather than a measured serving, and it covers the lecithin alone, never the product it is listed in.

What changes your risk

  • The rest of the ingredient list Soy lecithin turns up in chocolate, baked goods, spreads and dressings. Its presence says nothing about the other ingredients, so a bar or biscuit can still be high because of wheat, milk, inulin or a sugar alcohol sweetener.
  • Whole soy versus purified soy Lecithin is not the same as soybeans, soy flour or soy milk made from whole beans. Those forms keep the bean's carbohydrate and do not share this low rating.
  • Supplement blends Lecithin sold as granules, liquid or capsules is sometimes combined with other ingredients. A blend needs its full label read, because the rating applies to plain lecithin.
  • Typical amounts only The rating covers Any typical portion. Amounts far beyond what a food label or supplement label would normally involve fall outside what the rating describes.

What else works

If you would rather avoid soy entirely, sunflower lecithin does the same emulsifying job in home baking and smoothies and is likewise an isolated fatty extract. In cooking, egg yolk is the traditional emulsifier for mayonnaise and sauces and fits the same role. The lookalikes that are not low are the whole-bean soy foods people assume are related: whole mature soybeans at ordinary servings, soy flour, and soy milk made from whole soybeans. Firm tofu is a separate case and is a low FODMAP soy food in its own right.

How to keep it low

When soy lecithin appears on a packaged food, treat it as neutral and judge the product by everything else on the list, with particular attention to onion, garlic, honey, inulin or chicory root fibre, and sweeteners ending in -itol. If you buy lecithin to use at home, choose a product that lists only lecithin, keep granules in an airtight jar in the fridge so they do not go rancid, and stir liquid lecithin into dressings or doughs where you want a smoother, more stable texture.

Common questions

is soy lecithin low fodmap

Yes. Soy lecithin is low FODMAP at Any typical portion. It is a purified fatty emulsifier with negligible carbohydrate, and the rating is estimated from what it is made of.

is soy lecithin the same as eating soybeans

No. Lecithin is extracted from soybean oil and leaves the bean's carbohydrate behind, while whole mature soybeans, soy flour and soy milk made from whole beans keep it and are not low FODMAP at ordinary servings.

does soy lecithin in chocolate make it high fodmap

The lecithin itself does not. Whether the chocolate is low depends on the other ingredients, especially milk solids and any sugar alcohol sweeteners.

what can i use instead of soy lecithin

Sunflower lecithin is the closest swap and does the same job. For homemade sauces and mayonnaise, egg yolk works as a natural emulsifier.

Soybean Lecithin is an estimated rating: it is inferred from the food's ingredients and composition and cross-checked, not measured directly in the papers below. The low, moderate and high cutoffs are still those of Varney et al. (2017).
