Seafood (mixed)
Typical portion
- Any typical portion
Mixed seafood is Low FODMAP, a plain protein with essentially no fermentable carbohydrate to cause trouble.
- Plain mixed seafood is mostly protein and fat with negligible carbohydrate, so there are no FODMAPs to build up, and it stays gentle at any typical portion.
- The catch to watch is the cooking: breading, creamy sauces, or garlic and onion seasonings can add FODMAPs, so it is the preparation rather than the seafood itself that changes the picture.
Keep it simple by cooking your seafood with olive oil, lemon, and fresh herbs, or reach for garlic-infused oil when you want that savory depth.
Why seafood (mixed) is rated low
Mixed seafood is rated low FODMAP overall at Any typical portion, and no FODMAP subgroup is recorded for it. Plain prawns, squid, mussels, clams and fish are protein and fat with next to no carbohydrate, which is why the rating, estimated from what seafood is made of rather than from a measured serving, holds across ordinary helpings. The catch is everything that gets added: the marinade, the sauce, the stock and the coating decide whether a seafood dish stays low.
What changes your risk
- Marinades in the pack Frozen and chilled seafood mixes are often sold in a garlic, onion or herb marinade. Plain, unmarinated packs are the ones this rating covers.
- Sauces and stocks Marinara, chowder, bisque, laksa, paella bases and seafood stock are typically built on onion and garlic, and chowders add milk or cream. That turns a low ingredient into a dish that is not low.
- Batter and crumbs Calamari rings, crumbed fish and tempura use wheat flour coatings. Rice flour, polenta or gluten free crumbs keep the coating low.
- Whole-meal load Low at Any typical portion describes the seafood itself. The pasta, bread, garlic butter and sides around it set the meal's total, so pair it with rice, potato or gluten free pasta.
- Processed seafood products Seafood sticks, fish cakes and seafood balls contain added starches, fillers and seasonings, so they are different products and are not covered by this rating. Check the label.
What else works
Plain fish, chicken, eggs and firm tofu fill the same protein role and are also low FODMAP. The lookalikes that are not low are seafood dishes rather than seafood: a marinara mix sold in garlic sauce, seafood chowder made with milk and cream, battered or crumbed calamari, and paella or laksa built on onion and garlic. For the flavour those dishes usually rely on, use garlic-infused oil, chives, the green tops of spring onions, lemon and parsley.
How to keep it low
Buy plain frozen marinara mix or fresh seafood with nothing added, and read the ingredient list on anything marinated or pre-sauced. Thaw frozen seafood in the fridge and pat it dry so it sears rather than stews. Cook it quickly in garlic-infused oil with lemon, parsley and chives, then toss it through rice, gluten free pasta or potatoes. When ordering out, ask for the seafood grilled or pan-fried without garlic or onion, with any sauce on the side.
Common questions
is seafood low fodmap
Yes. Plain mixed seafood is rated low FODMAP overall at Any typical portion, estimated from what it is made of. Sauces, marinades and coatings are what change that.
is seafood marinara low fodmap
The seafood is, but a classic marinara sauce is cooked with onion and garlic. Make the sauce with garlic-infused oil, chives and the green tops of spring onions to keep it low.
can you eat prawns on the low fodmap elimination phase
Yes, plain prawns and other seafood are low FODMAP at Any typical portion. Check that they are not sold in a garlic or onion marinade.
is fried calamari low fodmap
Not usually as served, because the coating is generally wheat flour. Squid itself is low, so coat it in rice flour or gluten free flour at home.
