Lobster

Low FODMAP

Typical portion

  • Any typical portion Low

Lobster is Low FODMAP, a pure protein with virtually no fermentable carbohydrate to cause trouble.

  • Plain lobster is essentially all protein with negligible carbohydrate, so it carries no FODMAPs and stays gentle at any typical portion.

Enjoy it steamed or grilled, and keep an eye on rich sauces or garlic butter, since those add-ons can change the picture.

Why lobster is rated low

Plain lobster is low FODMAP. Its rating is estimated from what it is made of rather than from a measured serving: lobster meat is almost entirely protein with very little carbohydrate, and FODMAPs are carbohydrates, so there is nothing in the flesh itself to push the load up. The published ladder rates it low at "Any typical portion". What that does not cover is everything served with it. Lobster almost never arrives alone, and the butter, bisque, bun or dressing on the plate is where a lobster meal can stop being low.

What changes your risk

  • Garlic butter and sauces Melted butter on its own is fine, but garlic butter, thermidor sauce and many seafood dipping sauces are built on garlic, shallot or onion, which turn a low plate into a high one.
  • Bisque and stock Lobster bisque and lobster stock are usually cooked down with onion, shallot, celery and cream. Cooking does not break those FODMAPs down, so the soup carries them even though the lobster does not.
  • The roll and the filling A lobster roll is often served on an ordinary wheat bun, and the mayonnaise mix may include celery or onion. Each of those adds load the lobster itself never had.
  • Stacking across the meal Lobster is low, but the rating is per food, not per meal. A lobster dinner with garlic bread, a creamy side and a dessert with ice cream adds up, so judge the whole plate rather than the lobster alone.
  • Imitation lobster Imitation lobster is a processed fish product with added starches, binders and flavourings. It is not the same food and does not share this rating, so read the label.

What else works

Lobster sits alongside other plain seafood that is also low, such as prawns, crab, scallops, mussels and white fish, all of which work in the same dishes when they are cooked simply. The lookalikes that are NOT automatically low are the prepared versions: lobster bisque, lobster mac and cheese made with ordinary milk and wheat pasta, garlic butter lobster tails, and imitation lobster. For a lobster roll, gluten free bread or a traditional sourdough spelt roll keeps the base low, and chives or the green tops of spring onions give the filling an oniony bite without the onion bulb.

How to keep it low

Buy whole lobster or plain tails and cook them at home by steaming, boiling or grilling, so you control what goes on them. For a buttery finish, melt plain butter and stir in garlic-infused oil with no solid pieces left in it, then add lemon and chopped chives or parsley. When ordering out, ask whether the butter or sauce contains garlic or shallot, and ask for it on the side. For a lobster roll, bind the meat with plain mayonnaise, lemon and chives, and skip the celery.

Common questions

is lobster low fodmap

Yes. Plain lobster is rated low at "Any typical portion", an estimate based on what it is made of, since the meat is mostly protein with almost no carbohydrate.

is lobster bisque low fodmap

Usually not. Bisque is typically made with onion, shallot, celery and cream, and those ingredients carry the FODMAP load even though the lobster itself is low.

can i eat a lobster roll on a low fodmap diet

The lobster is fine, but a standard roll uses an ordinary wheat bun and often celery or onion in the filling. Swap in gluten free or traditional sourdough spelt bread and use chives instead of onion.

is imitation lobster low fodmap

Imitation lobster is a processed product with added starches and flavourings, so it does not share plain lobster's rating. Check the ingredient list before treating it the same way.

Lobster is an estimated rating: it is inferred from the food's ingredients and composition and cross-checked, not measured directly in the papers below. The low, moderate and high cutoffs are still those of Varney et al. (2017).
