Honeydew
Serving sizes
Honeydew changes rating with portion size. Its rating is estimated from what it is made of, so the servings are described rather than weighed.
- Small serving
- Large serving
Honeydew is Moderate FODMAP, a sweet melon whose natural sugars stay friendly in modest amounts but add up as the bowl grows.
- Honeydew carries more fructose than glucose, so it sits low at a small serving and climbs to moderate at a large serving as the Excess Fructose builds up.
- Melon is easy to over-pour when it is juicy and refreshing, so the serving size is what really drives where you land, and any added sweeteners or syrups can shift the picture.
Enjoy a small serving on its own or tossed through a fruit salad with lower-fructose fruits to keep things comfortable.
Why honeydew is rated moderate
Honeydew is MODERATE on a low FODMAP diet. The FODMAP recorded for it is excess fructose, meaning the melon carries more fructose than glucose, and that imbalance is what builds as the bowl grows. This rating is estimated from the composition of the melon rather than from a weighed serving, and the ladder is qualitative. A "Small serving" reads LOW, while a "Large serving" climbs to MODERATE. The overall answer is moderate, so honeydew is a fruit to portion deliberately rather than one to graze from. Melon is cold, sweet and easy to keep eating, which is exactly why the serving is the thing to watch.
What changes your risk
- The size of the bowl A "Small serving" is LOW and a "Large serving" is MODERATE. The melon does not change, only the amount, and honeydew is unusually easy to keep spooning because it is refreshing rather than filling.
- Fructose stacking through the day Excess fructose accumulates from several sources within a few hours. Honeydew after a breakfast with honey, alongside mango or watermelon in a fruit salad, or with a drink sweetened with high fructose corn syrup, pushes the total up even though each item was a modest amount.
- Juices and smoothies Juicing puts the sugars of several pieces into one glass and leaves the fibre behind, so blended or juiced honeydew runs higher than the same fruit eaten in slices.
- Added sweeteners Honeydew served in syrup, drizzled with honey or blended into a sweetened drink brings fructose from a second source on top of the melon's own.
- Chilling and cutting change nothing Refrigerating, freezing or blitzing honeydew does not lower its fructose. Cold fruit simply goes down faster, which is a portion problem rather than a chemistry one.
Swaps
Cantaloupe is the melon to reach for when you want the same cold, sweet role, and it does not carry honeydew's fructose imbalance. Strawberries, blueberries, raspberries, oranges, mandarins, kiwi, grapes and pineapple all work in a fruit salad or a summer platter. The fruits to keep out of that bowl are the ones that share the same problem: watermelon, mango, apple and pear will not rescue a fructose load, and honey as a drizzle makes it worse rather than better.
How to lower the load
Cut honeydew into a small bowl and put the rest of the melon back in the fridge rather than eating from the cut half, because the half is not a serving. When you build a fruit salad, let cantaloupe, strawberries and grapes make up the bulk and let honeydew be the accent rather than the base. Buy a whole melon and portion it yourself instead of a mixed tub, where the melon to berry ratio is decided for you and usually favours the melon. At a buffet or a brunch, take the melon once rather than returning to it, and keep it away from the same plate as mango or watermelon.
Common questions
how much honeydew is low fodmap
A "Small serving" of honeydew is LOW. A "Large serving" is MODERATE, and the melon is rated MODERATE overall, so a modest portion is what the data supports.
is honeydew high in fructose
Excess fructose is the FODMAP recorded for honeydew, and it is what takes a "Large serving" up to MODERATE. A "Small serving" still reads LOW.
is honeydew ok on the elimination phase
Honeydew is MODERATE overall, so it is not a fruit to eat freely during elimination. A "Small serving" reads LOW, and your dietitian is the right person to fit it into your own plan.
what about honeydew juice or a melon smoothie
Juicing and blending concentrate the sugars of several pieces into one glass and leave the fibre behind, so juiced honeydew runs higher than the same fruit eaten as slices. Eat the fruit rather than drink it.

Honeydew is an estimated rating: it is inferred from the food's ingredients and composition and cross-checked, not measured directly in the papers below. The low, moderate and high cutoffs are still those of Varney et al. (2017).
