Gooseberry
Serving sizes
Gooseberry changes rating with portion size. Its rating is estimated from what it is made of, so the servings are described rather than weighed.
- Small serving
- Large serving
Gooseberries are Low FODMAP, a tart little berry with modest sugar and balanced fruit sugars that keep a normal handful easy on your gut.
- These stay low at a small serving thanks to their balanced fructose-to-glucose, but the overall FODMAP load builds up at a large serving, tipping them to moderate.
- Gooseberries turn up fresh, stewed, or baked into pies and crumbles, and while the plain berry is gentle, sweetened or heavily concentrated preparations can shift the picture.
Keep to a small serving to stay comfortable, and enjoy them fresh or lightly stewed rather than in a sugar-loaded compote.
Why gooseberry is rated low
Gooseberries are low FODMAP overall, a rating estimated from what the berry is made of rather than from a measured serving. The ladder has two rungs: a "Small serving" comes in LOW, and a "Large serving" moves up to MODERATE. No problem subgroup is recorded for gooseberries, so the change between rungs is about how much you eat, with the overall load building as the bowl fills. Because gooseberries are so often cooked into puddings, the berry itself is rarely the whole story: what they are baked or stirred into frequently matters more than the fruit.
What changes your risk
- Serving size "Small serving" is LOW and "Large serving" is MODERATE. A generous helping of stewed gooseberries, where the fruit cooks down and more of it fits in a bowl, can reach the larger rung quickly.
- Pastry and crumble toppings Gooseberry pie and crumble usually come with ordinary wheat pastry or a wheat flour topping, which is not low FODMAP. The fruit filling can be fine while the dish as a whole is not.
- Cream, custard and sweeteners A classic gooseberry fool is folded through cream, and some recipes sweeten the fruit with honey. Both bring their own FODMAPs into the bowl. Table sugar or maple syrup and lactose-free yoghurt keep the dessert in step with the fruit.
- Stewing, jam and compote Cooking does not break down FODMAPs, and anything that leaves the berries stays in the syrup. Jam and thick compote are concentrated forms of the fruit and are not covered by the fresh rating.
- Stacking in mixed fruit dishes A low rating is per serving. Gooseberries in a mixed berry crumble or summer pudding add to the total FODMAP load of the dish, and blackberries, a common partner in hedgerow mixes, are not low FODMAP.
What else works
For a tart berry in crumbles, fools and breakfast bowls, raspberries, blueberries and strawberries are the closest low FODMAP stand-ins, and they mix well with gooseberries if you want to stretch the fruit across a bigger dish. Build the topping from oats with gluten free flour, or use a gluten free pastry, and serve with lactose-free yoghurt instead of cream. Watch the lookalikes: blackberries often turn up in the same mixed fruit desserts and are not low FODMAP, and cape gooseberries, sold in husks, are a different plant entirely, so do not assume the rating carries over.
How to keep it low
Fresh gooseberries need topping and tailing, so snip off both ends before cooking. They keep for several days in the fridge and freeze well spread on a tray, which lets you take out only what you need rather than defrosting a whole bag. When stewing, sweeten with table sugar or maple syrup instead of honey, and spoon out a "Small serving" rather than finishing the pan. At a bakery or restaurant, a gooseberry tart or crumble almost always means wheat pastry and cream, so ask about the crust and the custard before ordering.
Common questions
are gooseberries low fodmap
Yes. Gooseberries are rated low FODMAP overall, estimated from what they are made of. A "Small serving" is LOW and a "Large serving" is MODERATE.
is gooseberry crumble low fodmap
Usually not as served, because the topping is normally made with wheat flour and it often comes with cream or custard. Make it with an oat and gluten free flour topping and keep the fruit to a "Small serving".
is gooseberry jam low fodmap
Jam is a concentrated form of the fruit and is not covered by the fresh berry's rating. Fresh or lightly stewed gooseberries at a "Small serving" are the reliable choice.
are cape gooseberries the same as gooseberries
No. Cape gooseberries are a different plant, so the gooseberry rating should not be applied to them.

Gooseberry is an estimated rating: it is inferred from the food's ingredients and composition and cross-checked, not measured directly in the papers below. The low, moderate and high cutoffs are still those of Varney et al. (2017).
