Flax Seeds

Low FODMAP

Serving sizes

Flax Seeds changes rating with portion size. Its rating is estimated from what it is made of, so the servings are described rather than weighed.

  • Small serving Low
  • Large serving Moderate

Flax seeds are Low FODMAP, tiny seeds built mostly from fat, protein, and fiber with little fermentable carbohydrate to stir up trouble.

  • A small serving stays low, since there is barely any fermentable carbohydrate to speak of, but a large serving climbs to moderate as the overall fiber load adds up.
  • Flax comes whole or ground, and the ground version is easier to digest and to sprinkle into things; toppings or mixes you fold them into can shift the picture.

Stir a modest scoop into oats or a smoothie for a fiber boost while keeping your portion on the smaller side.

Why flax seeds is rated low

Flax seeds are low FODMAP overall, a rating estimated from what they are made of rather than from a measured serving. No FODMAP subgroup is recorded for them, so the answer comes down to amount. A Small serving comes in low, and a Large serving rises to moderate. That makes flax an easy topping when it stays a topping, and something to watch when it turns into a main ingredient in bakes, porridge or smoothies.

What changes your risk

  • Serving size Small serving: LOW, Large serving: MODERATE. A sprinkle on breakfast and a flax-heavy loaf or cracker are not the same thing, even though both are made from the same seed.
  • What it is mixed into Flax often lands in muesli, granola and seed mixes that also carry dried fruit, honey, cashews or pistachios, none of which are low FODMAP. The mix as a whole decides the load, not the flax alone.
  • Stacking in one bowl A Small serving of flax on porridge that also has dried fruit, ordinary yoghurt and a drizzle of honey adds to a breakfast that is no longer low, even though the flax itself is.
  • Whole or ground Grinding changes the texture and how easily flax blends in, but chopping and grinding do not destroy FODMAPs. The rating follows the amount, whichever form you use.

What else works

Other seeds and nuts that also suit a low FODMAP topping role include pumpkin seeds, walnuts, macadamias, pecans and peanuts, so you can rotate them rather than piling on more flax. The lookalikes that are not low: seed and nut mixes that include cashews or pistachios, granola clusters bound with honey or agave syrup, and fibre supplements or bars boosted with inulin or chicory root fibre. Read the ingredient list on any blend before treating it as plain flax.

How to keep it low

Buy plain whole or ground flax rather than a ready-made seed mix, so you control exactly what goes in. Ground flax keeps best in an airtight container in the fridge. Use the same spoon to measure it each time so a Small serving stays a Small serving, and sprinkle it over oats, lactose-free yoghurt with strawberries or blueberries, or a smoothie made with lactose-free milk and firm banana. When baking, remember that a recipe using flax as a main ingredient puts more into each piece than a topping does, so check how much ends up in a single portion.
