Fish Stick
Serving sizes
Fish Stick changes rating with portion size. Its rating is estimated from what it is made of, so the servings are described rather than weighed.
- Small serving
- Moderate serving
- Large serving
Fish sticks land at Moderate FODMAP, thanks to the wheat breadcrumb coating wrapped around an otherwise easygoing piece of fish.
- The fish inside is naturally free of fermentable carbs, but the wheat crumb coating brings Fructans to the plate: a small serving stays low, a moderate serving climbs to moderate, and a large serving tips into high territory.
- Fish sticks come in many coatings, so the breading is what drives the level here, and added seasonings or batters can shift the picture.
Keep to a smaller serving to stay comfortable, or make your own with a gluten-free crumb coating over plain white fish.
Why fish stick is rated moderate
Fish sticks are moderate FODMAP overall. The rating is estimated from what they are made of rather than from a measured serving, and the fructans come from the wheat breadcrumb coating, not the fish inside. Across the ladder the climb is clear: a "Small serving" reads low, a "Moderate serving" reaches moderate, and a "Large serving" turns high. That is why the overall answer is moderate: an ordinary plateful lands in the middle of that climb, so this is a portion to respect rather than one to stop counting.
What changes your risk
- Serving size The coating is where the fructans live, so more sticks means more wheat crumb. The ladder goes from low at a "Small serving" to moderate at a "Moderate serving" and high at a "Large serving".
- Stacking with other wheat A fish stick sandwich on an ordinary wheat bun, or a side of wheat-crumbed chips or onion rings, piles more fructans onto the same meal and pushes it toward high fast.
- The coating and seasoning Breadcrumbs and batters differ, and some seasoning mixes add onion or garlic powder. A coating with either in the ingredient list carries more fructans than a plain crumb.
- Dips and sides Tartar sauce and other dips can contain onion or garlic, and ordinary coleslaw dressings may too. These add to the same fructan load the coating already brings.
- Cooking method Baking, air frying and pan frying do not lower the fructans in the crumb. Nothing leaves the coating, so the serving size still decides the level.
Swaps
The cleanest swap is plain white fish with no coating, or white fish coated at home in gluten free breadcrumbs, crushed rice crackers or polenta, which fills the same crunchy role without the wheat fructans. Gluten free crumbed fish fingers, where the ingredient list is free of onion and garlic, also do the job. On the plate, serve them with potato wedges, rice, carrots, green beans or cucumber rather than wheat buns or onion rings, and use a squeeze of lemon instead of a dip of unknown makeup.
How to lower the load
Read the box before you buy: look for a wheat-free crumb and check the seasoning for onion and garlic powder. When you cook them, take the number you are serving out of the box first and put the rest back in the freezer, so the plate stays at the smaller end of the ladder. Build the rest of the meal from low FODMAP sides such as oven potatoes and a green vegetable, and skip the bread so the coating is the only wheat in the meal. Homemade versions freeze well too: crumb plain white fish in a gluten free coating, freeze them flat, and bake from frozen.
Common questions
are fish sticks low fodmap
Fish sticks are moderate FODMAP overall. A "Small serving" reads low, a "Moderate serving" is moderate, and a "Large serving" is high, because of the fructans in the wheat crumb coating.
are fish fingers high in fructans
The fructans come from the wheat breadcrumb coating rather than the fish. The load rises with the serving, reaching high at a "Large serving".
can i have fish sticks on the elimination phase
Ordinary wheat-crumbed fish sticks are moderate overall, so they need careful portioning and a meal with no other wheat, onion or garlic. Gluten free crumbed or homemade versions with a wheat-free coating are the easier route.
what is a low fodmap alternative to fish sticks
Plain white fish coated in gluten free breadcrumbs, crushed rice crackers or polenta gives the same crunch without the wheat fructans. Check that any seasoning is free of onion and garlic.

Fish Stick is an estimated rating: it is inferred from the food's ingredients and composition and cross-checked, not measured directly in the papers below. The low, moderate and high cutoffs are still those of Varney et al. (2017).
