Dogfish (smoked)
Typical portion
- Any typical portion
Smoked dogfish is Low FODMAP, a plain fish that's pure protein and fat with nothing fermentable to stir up trouble.
- Fish is essentially protein and fat with negligible carbohydrate, and the smoking process adds no FODMAPs, so any typical portion stays comfortably low with no subgroups to worry about.
Enjoy it as is, and if you're building a meal around it, watch any glazes or marinades since added garlic or onion is what usually tips a fish dish over the line.
Why dogfish (smoked) is rated low
Smoked dogfish is low FODMAP. It is fish flesh, which is protein and fat with next to no carbohydrate, and the smoking itself adds no FODMAPs, so the rating comes out low. That rating is estimated from what the fish is made of rather than from a measured serving, and the published serving data gives one rung: "Any typical portion" is LOW. Bigger helpings are not covered by the rating, and what usually tips a smoked fish dish over is what comes with it: a creamy pâté, a garlicky marinade or a base of ordinary bread.
What changes your risk
- Glazes and marinades Plain smoked fish is low, but some smoked products are finished with a glaze or marinade. Onion, garlic or honey in that coating brings FODMAPs the fish itself does not have.
- Pâtés and spreads Smoked fish is often blended into a spread with cream cheese or ordinary cream, and sometimes onion. Those ingredients carry the load, not the dogfish.
- What it is served on Ordinary wheat or rye bread, wheat crackers and wheat blinis add their own FODMAPs under the fish.
- Stacking across the meal A smoked fish platter with pickled onion, an apple slaw and wheat crackers puts several FODMAP sources together in one sitting. Each looks minor beside the fish, but the whole meal is what counts.
- Warming it through Smoked dogfish can be eaten cold or gently heated. Heating does not change its rating, and it does not remove FODMAPs from anything cooked alongside it either.
What else works
Other plain fish sit in the same place: smoked mackerel, smoked trout, smoked haddock and plain fresh white fish are all protein and fat with next to no carbohydrate, and eggs or plain chicken fill the same role in a meal. The lookalikes that are NOT reliably low are the prepared versions: smoked fish pâté made with cream cheese or cream, fish cakes bound with wheat breadcrumbs and onion, kedgeree cooked with onion, battered fish in a wheat batter, and any smoked fish sold in a garlic or onion marinade.
How to keep it low
Read the label on vacuum packs and deli tubs for onion, garlic or honey, and choose plain smoked fillets where you can. Keep it chilled and use it by the date on the pack. Flake it into rice, a potato salad dressed with garlic-infused oil and chives, or scrambled eggs, and pair it with cucumber, lemon or baby spinach. For a spread, mash it with lactose-free yoghurt and chives rather than cream cheese, and serve it on gluten free crackers or traditional sourdough spelt bread instead of ordinary wheat.
